Ten Years

(listen)

Ten years of dragging your shadow behind me
a ghost like a line in your face
A black day in August, a million good reasons
to forget that you ever took place
and I still wonder why and I still shed a tear
when I feel the wind beckon the fall
and I've been waiting ten years for you to call

I'm having a hard time trying to remember
what it is that I used to be
I hold on so tightly to earthly possessions
like holding onto electricity
but I remember the message you left on my birthday
'we'll meet at the usual place'
and I've been waiting ten years to see your face

The Chinese fireworks fall over the water
and light up the boats in the rain
and I've been waiting ten years to see you again

Artist's Note

I was watching an international fireworks display on my roof, and some of the best fireworks I saw were from China. It made me think of a dear, departed friend and shocked me how long it had been since we'd seen each other. Sometimes you keep on expecting to see somebody, and then you remember that they're gone.
